Ball features stories of cancer survivors

Hearing a diagnosis of “malignant cancer” spins a patient’s world into frenzy. An “estimated 1,762,450 new cancer cases in the United States alone” are projected to be diagnosed in 2019, according to the American Cancer Society. Although that number is staggering, more patients each year are celebrating the title of “survivor,” someone who receives a diagnosis of cancer, is taking or has completed treatment, and is currently living.
A Survivor Style Show will celebrate cancer survivors from the Southwest Nebraska area at the 2019 Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska. “Guests can expect an afternoon of listening to inspiring stories of strong individuals who have battled, are still battling, or have had loved ones fight the fight with cancer,” Style Show Chairperson Stephanie Stromberger of Imperial said. “Area boutiques have been generous enough to help dress these beautiful individuals for the show.”
Eleven-year-old Kye Terryberry, son of Vanessa and Danny Terryberry of Imperial, is one of almost 30 survivors who will share their stories.
Diagnosed with hepatoblastoma, a rare liver tumor at eight months of age, young Kye went through 15 different surgeries and then four months of chemotherapy, all in his first year of life.
“Kye has been through more than anything that any one person should have to,” Kye’s mother, Vanessa, said. However, Kye has been cancer-free for a little over 10 years. He loves riding his dirt bike and the four-wheeler, playing X-Box, and going fishing.
