Breast cancer event returning to Wauneta

Chase County Hospital’s Cancer Walk/Run 5K is returning to Wauneta.
The event will be here Oct. 6 in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
It will start at 7 a.m. with registration at the Community Building, with a shotgun start planned for 7:30 a.m.
Registration will be $20 for individuals and $15 per person for teams of four or more.
Included with that registration fee will be a pancake breakfast at the Legion Hall. Free-will donations will be taken from those who don’t want to participate but still want to eat.
The hospital also will hold a “Split the Pot” raffle, with the winner getting half of the proceeds from that, with the rest going to the hospital’s cancer programs. Tickets will be $5 for one or $20 for five.
Deb Hrcka of the Chase County Hospital Foundation, said it’s difficult to say how many people are expected to participate, but past events have drawn anywhere from 60 to 100.
All of the money raised from the event and sponsors stays in this area, Hrcka said.
In the hospital’s cancer program, anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer, or who needs preventive care and cannot afford it, can submit a request for financial assistance.
That request is forwarded to their doctor, who informs the foundation of the severity of their condition, which determines how much money they can get.
