Chase murder cases not ready for trial yet

The cases of two people accused of killing an Imperial woman are still making their way toward trial — very slowly, nearly a year after her body was found.
Former Imperial resident Kevin Scot German, 24, and 22-year-old Keonna Nilsa Carter face first degree murder charges in the death of Annika Swanson.
German and Carter also were originally charged with use of a firearm to commit a felony, kidnapping, false imprisonment-first degree, terroristic threats and assault-third degree. All but the murder and kidnapping charges were later dropped.
The Nebraska Attorney General’s Office is the lead prosecutor on the case.
Suzanne Gage, a spokeswoman for the Attorney General’s Office, said prosecutors still are in the middle of the discovery phase of the case and no trial date has been set. She did not know when that would happen.
In the discovery phase of a criminal case, both sides exchange information about witnesses and evidence they plan to present at trial.
The latest hearings in the case were scheduled this week, Monday for German and Tuesday for Carter. Both hearings were to be conducted by telephone.
Swanson, 22, Imperial, was reported missing days before her body was found five miles south of Imperial. It was the first time murder charges were filed in Chase County since 1978.
The case began Nov. 21 when Monti Swanson of Imperial contacted Chase County Sheriff Kevin Mueller’s office to report he had not seen or heard from his daughter for a week and was concerned for her safety. The Sheriff’s Office immediately began an investigation.
