Commissioners, VFW memorial committee discuss memorial location

Chase County Commissioners Dave Hogsett, Dennis Kunnemann and Chuck Vette urged VFW members to move forward with their plans for a memorial at the Nov. 13 commissioners’ meeting.
Six members of VFW Post 4688 were on hand to review a proposal to purchase a lot on the north side of Imperial for $10,000.
The commissioners encouraged the group to use the northeast corner of the courthouse lawn rather than purchase the lot.
The memorial has been in development since 2016. Locating it at the courthouse has long been a part of the discussion as well, along with other locations such as the lot north of the Lied Imperial Public Library.
At one time the Veteran’s Service Committee looked at the southeast corner of the courthouse, but the location of a water main under that part of the property made the committee look for another location.
With the removal of two or three trees, which would be replaced around the memorial, the commissioners feel the northeast corner would be an appropriate location.
