Two Wauneta-Palisade High School students were among 19 from Nebraska who took an all-expenses-paid trip to the nation’s capital earlier this year.
Joel Maris and Caid Doetker were among students on the 2018 Rural Electric Cooperative Youth Tour.
The trip is sponsored by public power districts and electric cooperatives from across the nation.
NREA Youth Tour Director James Dukesherer was quoted in the organization’s magazine as saying the tour is “our way of saying ‘thank you for choosing to be a leader.’ We know in today’s world, it’s difficult to stand up for the right things and these students do that every day.”
Participants and chaperones visited many of the nation’s major monuments, including the Washington, Lincoln and Jefferson memorials; the Smithsonian; Mount Vernon; the National Holocaust Museum; the Capitol; and met with Nebraska Sens. Deb Fischer and Ben Sasse and Reps. Adrian Smith and Jeff Fortenberry.
