Palisade’s chicken ordinance back to square one

The Palisade chicken ordinance, passed at the March 8 Palisade Village Board meeting, failed in it’s second reading last Wednesday, April 12.
Board members present at the meeting were split on their opinion of the current stipulations of the proposed ordinance to allow chickens within Palisade city limits.
Board members Brock Malcolm and Shane Gerhartz voted to approve the ordinance during the second reading while board members Jason Hicks and Reid Ott voted against. Board member Brian Monnahan was not present at the April meeting.
The ordinance’s second reading included two amendments. The first changes the annual permit renewal date from July 1 to March 1. The second requires the homeowners of neighboring properties to sign off on permit applications.
Due to the tie vote, the ordinance passage failed and proponents of the ordinance will have to seek to have it placed back on the board’s agenda at a future meeting in order for it to be considered again.
