Personal dispute may leave work undone in Hamlet

Grass isn’t being mowed and streets won’t be plowed this winter in Hamlet because of accusations made at a Sept. 3 Village Board meeting.
Board President Gary Greeley has quit providing that service after village resident San D. Nolte tore into him in a recent board meeting.
According to the minutes of that meeting, “Greeley had something to say about himself as being the one board member being appointed to be the one to drive the tractor for moving and moving snow for the residents of Hamlet.”
But, the minutes said, Nolte “stated her opinion to the crowd that Gary Greeley was a crook and dishonest as his wife (clerk) was also with no proof whatsoever.” Greeley’s wife, Dawanna, is clerk-treasurer for the village, and also writes the minutes.
An audiotape of the meeting provided by Dawanna Greeley is unclear; Nolte said later she did not say they were “crooks,” but that they were “crooked.”
Greeley said while he was remaining on as chairman of the board, he would no longer do mowing and plowing.
Speaking later, he said, “Somebody else is going to have to do it. They called me a crook and I decided I had enough of that. I did it for eight years.”
What’s more, he said, nobody at the meeting spoke up to defend him, he said. “It just p.o.’d me.”
Greeley said he originally was paid $10 an hour, which was eventually raised to $15. The amount of time he spends on the job varies, but last month he worked 11 hours.
