Pool sees fewer users, short season

The Wauneta Swimming Pool managed to make it through this summer, despite a shortened season and lower-than-normal attendance.
The pool opened after mid-June — considerably later than its usual opening after Memorial Day — and closed Aug. 11. The delayed opening was due to state Directed Health Measures that kept swimming pools, among other public venues, closed.
And despite brain-frying temperatures on some days, pool attendance was down, according to manager Hannah Nordhausen.
“The year before, we had around 30” swimmers a day on average, Nordhausen said. “This year, I would say the average was 15 to 20ish.”
She said she was uncertain what caused the attendance drop. “I don’t know if it’s because we opened so late. I don’t think people were afraid to go. With the coronavirus stuff, it wasn’t that big of a difference of things we had to do. I don’t see that as affecting the numbers we had. I don’t know, it was just a weird summer.”
