School board discusses gym floor

“Slick” often is a compliment, but not when it comes to a gym floor.
“We’ve had issues with it,” administrator Joseph Frecks told the Wauneta-Palisade School Board Monday.
While the floor “wasn’t horrible,” it’s gotten worse over the last couple of years, Frecks said. And School Board President Jon Anderjaska noted that there probably have been traveling calls in some basketball games simply because a player was unable to stop and slid on the floor.
The surface has a tendency to get dusty, Frecks said, even when it’s swept before and during practices and games, adding to the problem.
Plans are to have the floor refinished over Christmas break. The previous finish is water-based, which Frecks said is “not as tacky as an oil-based finish” but is about half the cost. But “it was at a point last year where it was almost dangerous”.
