SWPPD battles ice during weekend storm

Over the weekend Southwest Public Power District customers experienced a weather event that caused several outages across the eastern two-thirds of its district.
Anywhere from .60 to 1.50 inches of rain fell across the affected area then turned to snow.
Four inches of rain-soaked mud with a few inches of slushy snow on top made for nearly impassable road conditions.
The temperatures were perfect for building ice on lines Friday night and into Saturday. Overall the SWPPD system endured the ice buildup very well; not one pole failed during the event.
However, had wind velocities increased to over 30 mph this storm could have resulted in a devastating ending.
