Village extends grace period to pay utility bills

In a marathon meeting April 14, Wauneta’s Board of Trustees dealt with financial matters both small — giving residents more time to pay utility bills — and large — a new HVAC system for Wauneta Care and Therapy Center.
Trustees voted to extend suspension of late fees on utility bills and utility disconnects until the end of May.
In a move aimed at people who may become unemployed due to shutdowns during the coronavirus pandemic, in a meeting last month trustees voted to do that until the end of this month.
But with the pandemic situation still fluid, and the possibility that it really has not hit the immediate area, Village Clerk Evelyn Skelton asked trustees if they wanted to keep the suspensions in place, and for how long.
Skelton also asked that if they are, anyone taking advantage of them — eight Wauneta residents have so far — call Village Hall so she will be aware of any missed payments that will have to be made up. She also suggested that anyone who gets two or three months behind set up a payment plan with the village to catch up.
Several ideas were discussed, from just going back to the old system, which did not give any kind of grace period, to saying nothing and letting individual residents call the village to set up a payment plan.
