Wauneta businessman donates money to McCook firefighters

A Wauneta businessman who is a regular donor to the Wauneta Volunteer Fire Department has spread the love to McCook.
Hondo Fanning of Hondo Fanning Construction has donated $1,000 to McCook firefighters.
“The egress windows that I install kind of coordinate with the firemen,” Fanning said. “I gave it to them because we’ve been all over McCook for the last year, so I wanted to give back.”
Fanning, who has firefighters working for him, has given money to the Wauneta department to send local people to a firefighting contest in Grand Island, Nebraska. He pays their entry and lodging costs.
The McCook donation is not for any specific purpose, he said.
Egress windows are specifically designed to provide an escape route from a basement in case of fire. Fanning started specializing in installing them last year, when he put in 22; so far this year, he’s put in 89.
They’re generally put in as part of a remodeling of an existing home, although they are required in new construction. “There’s no window police that go around,” he said. “If somebody’s getting ready to sell a home and they want to list the basement [as a living space], so they get more money for it,” they often buy an egress window. They also provide more light and ventilation for the basement, he added.
