Wrestling program continues to grow

The Wauneta-Palisade wrestling team continues to show growth, finishing the season with six healthy wrestlers on the mat at districts.
Senior Zackary Barrett finished 6-12 in his first season on the mat for the Broncos.
WP coach Danny Schluckebier said Barrett was motivated though out the season and worked hard in practice.
“Zack improved greatly on technique and endurance, and became very respectful and motivated his team mates,” Schluckebier said. He added that it was nice seeing Barrett excited and motivated for practice, picking others up and making it work.
Barrett’s practice partner was sophomore Hunter Miner.
Miner finished with WP’s best record, 19-15, and fell one win short of a trip to Omaha.
“Hunter is still young and so much potential,” Schluckebier said. “He is more motivated than last year and his technique has improved.”
Schluckebier said things started to click for Miner when he gained the confidence to rebound well after a loss.
Sophomore Cody Holmes went 13-21 this season.
“Being another in a tough weight class Cody learned better technique quickly and motivated other teammates,” said Schluckebier. “His season was tough and wrestled tough kids the whole way through.”
Holmes got stronger physically and mentally,  and learned better technique this season, Schluckebier said, before losing in the heartbreak round at districts.
Sophomore Cole Hamilton went 5-18 as WP’s heavyweight.
Schluckebier said Hamilton was a fun guy to have at practice, while showing improvement in the will and determination to work hard to win.
“Cole wanted to lose some pounds so he got determined to do it. He wanted to learn a new move and learned it well. Cole was determined and hopefully will carry that with him next season with the rest of them,” Schluckebier said.
Freshmen Tennille Warembourg and Koltar Rahn also completed the season.
