The Wauneta-Palisade boys’ basketball team picked up a huge win Friday, beating Dundy County-Stratton 82-79.
    Less than a month ago, Jan. 23, DCS beat the Broncos during the RPAC tournament, 44-65.
    Five Broncos scored in the first quarter, keeping WP within striking distance. Following two Cash Yearous free throws, WP held a 15-13 lead with less than a minute left in the first quarter. DCS scored two baskets to lead 15-17 at the end of the first.
    WP continued to spread the offensive wealth around in the second quarter. The Broncos opened up a 25-20 lead, but were unable to hold DCS off.
    The Tigers came back to take a 27-28 lead and increased it to 35-39 at the end of the first half.
    WP got with it early in the third quarter, scoring on four of its first five possessions and vaulting the Broncos to a 44-42 lead.
    WP closed out the half on a 8-2 run and led 54-49 heading into the final stanza.
    Following two free throws on DCS’s first possession, Duncan Rector scored eight-straight points to open up a double-digit 62-51 lead.
    With five minutes left, WP led 64-56. Two minutes later, WP held a 69-60 lead and showed good composure, running nearly a minute off the clock. At that point DCS began to foul and WP didn’t run its offense for the rest of the game.
    The Broncos made 13-of-20 down the stretch, as baskets by DCS cut into the lead.
    Senior Cash Yearous made three-of-four free throw attempts over the final 14 seconds to seal the win, Overall, Yearous made nine-of-11 free throws in the game and finished with 26 points.
    Yearous led four Broncos in double-figures. Rector scored 17 points, Caid Doetker 12 and Austen Rozelle 11 points.
    WP finished the game making 18-of-28 free throws while DCS made 14-of-19.
