Broncs battle past scrappy Falcons, earn trip to RPAC semifinals

The Wauneta-Palisade volleyball team fought off the resilient Hitchcock County Falcons before their hometown fans Monday night for a place in the RPAC tournament semifinals.
WP soundly defeated Paxton in the opening round and it looked like  the trend would continue against the Falcons.
With the first set tied at three, Haylee Sandman and Destany Simpson took control of the net. The duo paired up for a block and combined for three kills.
The run sparked a 25-13 win, but the set ended with numerous attack errors for each side.
Aggressive WP serving kept the Falcons’ passers on their heels throughout the set, but Hitchcock County found some answers in the second set.
WP opened up an 18-11 lead with kills from H. Sandman, Simpson, Faith Lemon and Payton Yearous. But Hitchcock County found an extra gear down the stretch, notching six kills and a block, to take the set 21-25.
Set three continued to be a battle. WP had a four-point lead 16-12, before the Falcons tied the match at 17.
Two attacking errors by the Falcons gave WP a two-point lead and back-to-back kills by H. Sandman increase the advantage to 22-18. Kills by H. Sandman and Simpson and an ace from Alexa Sandman finished off the set 25-19.
WP picked the fourth set up where it left off. Attack errors by Hitchcock County helped WP to a 6-2 lead.
The Falcons clawed back into the match, taking a 7-8 lead, and never looked back. As the WP offense struggled, Hitchcock County forced a fifth set with a 20-25 win.
The Broncos looked doomed early in the fifth set, digging themselves into a 1-6 hole.
An attack error by the Falcons sent A. Sandman to the service line, where she reeled off three aces. Kills by Michaela Dukes and H. Sandman helped tie the game at six.
