National Safe Boating Week is May 18 – 24, 2019

Did you know the National Weather Service (NWS) holds an annual National Safe Boating Week? This year National Safe Boating Week runs from May 18th to May 24th. During this time the NWS and the National Safe Boating Council will continue their tradition of working year-round to help promote safe boating practices.
“Many residents of western and north central Nebraska are not strangers to boating or visiting our area’s reservoirs and lakes. For instance, looking at our state, Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area in Ogallala has been the 2nd most visited attraction in Nebraska based on the most recent data the last two years, 2016 and 2017. Over 1.7 million visitors were counted in 2017 per the Nebraska Tourism Commission, many of whom enjoy their time on the water. Further, many enjoy boating, fishing, and other water sports on our other area reservoirs and lakes. That said, boating can be a risky activity. Knowing what to do before you go out on the water is vital” said Ed Townsend, Lead Forecaster at the National Weather Service in North Platte.
