Wauneta-Palisade linemen (left to right) Zach Barrett, George Lee, Gunner Goings and Aidan Kennicutt pave the way for quarterback Braxton McKinney (25) and fullback Austen McKinney (7).
Win over Bertrand evens Wauneta-Palisade’s record to 2-2
Experience in close games paid off for the Wauneta-Palisade football team Friday when WP brought home a 26-21 victory.
“We have now played in four very tough football games,” WP Co-Head Coach Joseph Frecks said. “The experience from the first three definitely helped us finish this game off the right way.”
Faced with fourth and nine to go, the Broncos got on the board first with a 28-yard pass from Braxton McKinney to Austen Rozelle.
Though Bertrand was also able to find the end zone in the first quarter, it was the second stanza that made the difference for the Broncos.
WP scored on its first possession in the quarter on a two-yard plunge by Rozelle.
Bertrand took advantage of a WP turnover to take a 13-14 lead, but the Broncos were quick to respond.
McKinney connected with Rozelle on two of WP’s four plays in the drive. The second completion went for a nine-yard touchdown with 37.3 seconds left in the half.
Bertrand reclaimed the lead on its first possession of the second half. The Vikings evaded the Bronco blitz to score on a five-yard pass.
WP responded with a nine-play drive. WP completed two passes on its march down the field. The second was tipped at the goal line and reeled in by Ty Duvel for a 5-yard touchdown with 5:49 left in the quarter. Though it was the final score of the game, the drama continued.
Bertrand went to the air to drive down the field on the ensuing possession, but was hampered by holding penalties. On fourth down, Grant Walker broke up a pass in the end zone to keep WP in the lead.
