WP dominates MHC, Arthur County

The Wauneta-Palisade boys’ basketball team ran its record to 16-5 last week with 50-plus point wins over Maywood/Hayes Center and Arthur County.
At home Friday, WP jumped out to a 12-0 lead over MHC. The Bronco pressure kept the Wolves from finding any offensive rhythm during the game while the offense made 48 percent of its field goals in the game.
Duncan Rector scored nine first-quarter points. Caid Doetker and Dennis Cavanaugh each chipped in six points.
The physicality of the game kicked up in the second quarter as the Broncos extended their lead. WP made 9-14 free throws in the second quarter, including 8-11 over the final three minutes of the half.
The game got chippy in the second half as WP extended its lead to 40 points by the midway point of the third quarter when WP Head Coach Dave Kuhlen cleared the bench.
Rector led four Broncos in double figures with 24 points. Ty Duvel was on the finishing end of many WP fast breaks and ended the game with 17 points. Cavanaugh and Doetker scored 15 and 12 points, respectively, in the 88-30 win.
The offensive explosion continued Saturday at Arthur County. Different combinations of seven Broncos scored in the first three quarters. Five players made three-pointers. For the second night in a row WP starters didn’t play in the fourth quarter.
Coach Dave Kuhlen was pleased with the offensive output.
“I think these two games absolutely helped us, as the kids are scoring a lot of points and playing their best basketball of the season,” Kuhlen said.
Cavanaugh, Duvel, Joel Maris, Dalton Harchelroad and Braxton McKinney finished in double figures.
