WP wins rough-and-tumble game against Garden County

The Wauneta-Palisade girls’ basketball team split games with Perkins County and Garden County last weekend.
WP missed out on an opportunity for a win Friday at Perkins County.
The Broncos were able to put points on the board early, opening up a 7-2 lead. PC narrowed the gap to two points before consecutive baskets by Alexa Sandman and Michaela Dukes reestablished an 11-5 lead. PC responded with seven straight points to take its first lead of the contest. Free throws by Destany Simpson and Dakota Ingold gave WP a 13-12 lead at the end of the first.
A basket by Maycee Wheeler was answered by a PC three-pointer to tie the game at 15 in the second quarter. After one Dukes free throw, Simpson converted the miss then went on to give WP a 20-15 lead with another basket. The Broncos traded two PC baskets with one from Ingold, taking a 22-19 into the locker room.
WP maintained the lead in the second half. Following a basket by Haylee Sandman, Dukes made one free throw and two baskets. The Broncos headed into the fourth quarter with a 29-27 lead. Poor free throw shooting caught up with the Broncos in the final stanza. Although WP got 3s from Zoey Boos and A. Sandman and 2s by Dukes and Simpson, WP missed all nine free throw attempts.
