County roads a rough subject for commissioners

Chase County Commissioners Dave Hogsett, Chuck Vette and Don Weiss, Jr. heard nearly an hour’s worth of comments concerning the condition of roads in north east Chase County.
    Critics said the roads were in good shape last fall, but over the summer roads have gone down hill. As silage and grain trucks hit the road this fall, they said it is often dangerous for cars meeting them on the road.
    Complaints included piles on the side of the road so owners can’t mow the ditches, pasture driveways blocked, loaded trailers bottoming out, humps in intersections, blowing sand, grass growing in a road and wash outs, among others.
    Of the eight residents on hand, several brought in pictures.
    Amy Gittlein said many years ago a lot of work went into getting the roads into shape.
    “Now all that hard work has gone to waste,” she said. “Employees need to be held accountable.”
    Rex Kerchal added that he is holding Vette responsible for not holding his county employees accountable for their performances.
    Vette said it looks much easier from the outside looking in and he will take the operator out for a drive over the roads to discuss the problems.

New county building
    Despite not have a building permit yet, the commissioners made a few decisions about the proposed new county building after a visit from Engineering International.
    The commissioners chose a gray color which should be close to the color of the USDA Service Center.
    Also chosen were the details for the sign on the front of the building which will say Chase County in 24-inch black letters upon approval of Nick Schultz, Imperial Building Inspector/Zoning Officer.
