Broncos to face Dundy County-Stratton to end regular season

The Wauneta-Palisade boys’ basketball team improved to 12-8 Friday evening with a 61-23 win over Maywood/Hayes Center.
Both teams started slow. MHC was leading 0-4 before a three-pointer by Ben Anderjaska put the Broncos on the board.
WP added a putback by Cord Lee and free throws by Anderjaska and Dennis Cavanaugh in the quarter and led 8-6 at the end of the first.
WP Head Coach Dave Kuhlen said everyone on the team wants to be a starter, but there is heavy responsibility that goes along with the honor, including getting the team off on the right foot.
The Broncos broke the game open in the second quarter, thanks in part to the subs off the bench.
“Our second group was more aggressive on both offense and defense, which led to much better scoring opportunities,” Kuhlen said.
Cavanaugh quickly scored six points in the second quarter to jump start the Bronco offense. WP went on to score on five-straight possessions to end the half and hold a 33-9 lead.
While the offense cooled in the third quarter, the Broncos’ defense continued to play well. WP outscored the Wolves 11-2 in the third quarter.
