Broncos fall in five at subdistricts to MHC

After a first-round sweep of Medicine Valley in the D2-8 subdistrict tournament, the Wauneta-Palisade volleyball team fell in five sets to Maywood/Hayes Center.
The tournament finals got off to a great start for the Broncos.
WP took its first lead at 6-5, then forced an MHC timeout after the Broncos gained a 9-6 advantage. The Wolves quickly took another time-out after WP increased the lead to 11-6.
WP maintained a comfortable lead throughout the set, winning 25-17. Senior Dakota Ingold served two aces down the stretch to help shut the door on the Wolves.
WP’s momentum carried over to the second set. The Broncos jumped out to a 7-1 lead as attackers Haylee Sandman and Payton Yearous earned kills, while Ingold and Monique Gooden kept MHC on its heels with service aces. Sandman added two blocks during the run. As the Wolves tried to claw back into the match, kills by Alexa Sandman kept WP’s lead at six points, 12-6.
MHC came back to tie the game at 13, but was never able to take the lead.
Three kills by H. Sandman kept MHC at arm’s length and an ace by Michaela Dukes gave WP set point, 24-19.
Momentum in the match started to swing to the Wolves, as MHC closed the gap to two points before WP won 25-22.
The Broncos quickly fell behind in set three. WP trailed 1-10 before three kills by H. Sandman. Kills by Yearous and A. Sandman helped narrow the gap, especially when added to MHC attack errors.
WP narrowed the gap to 12-17 before a kill by A. Sandman and block by H. Sandman pulled WP to 14-17. MHC reeled off five kills down the stretch of the 17-25 WP loss.
